The Service of Giving

Over time, short-term giving turns into long-term living. You can only help when you can help, which means that if you’re not able, that’s ok. Believing that the Universe is abundant and will continually provide you with an endless supply of energy isn’t the truth.

So what is your giving taking away from you?

It’s not that we should stop giving; trust me, the world needs more giving. But we need to be aware of the suffering of our surroundings. We need to be strong, healthy and clear-minded, and we need to show up for the right reasons.

If you’ve been part of my community for a while now, you know that I’m all about hustling, but equally about resting and self-care. If your own energy supplies are adequate, how the heck are you supposed to help? Where is your giving energy coming from? You must take care of yourself, first and foremost. That’s the truth. There’s nothing more true than that. You must be number one in your life.

Heck ya, we want to give all we’ve got, but then we run the risk of a complete crash and burn (you’ve seen me do that!) and running on that empty tank causes burdens to those around us – we get grumpy, irritated, sick, unreliable. When that happens, we almost forget about seeing people for who they are and we just see projects or our never-ending to-do lists. When we lose this connection with other people, we lose our purpose of serving others in the first place.

So take it from me, this wise, experience soul... give yourself to YOU first. Then everything else will fall in place as the Universe sees fit. Be patient.
